PhD positions in gravitational-wave data analysis at VUB (Brussels)

Job description:The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) invites applications for outstanding PhD candidates in the field of gravitational wave physics and high energy physics (HEP).

The research program of the HEP group at the VUB includes string theory, BSM physics, gravitational wave physics, dark matter physics, astro-particle physics and collider physics. The PhD student will be immersed in a very active group working in the area of high energy physics.

The research activity of the PhD will be focused on the stochastic background of gravitational waves, ranging from theoretical modelling to data analysis. The gravitational waves group at VUB (A. Mariotti, M. Sakellariadou, A. Sevrin) is part of the Virgo/LIGO collaboration and of the BelGrav network, and it is actively involved in the development of the future observatory Einstein Telescope and its R&D facility ETpathfinder. During the PhD, a close collaboration with the neighboring universities KULeuven and UAntwerpen is foreseen. The open position is within the iBOF network of excellence “Unlocking the Dark Universe with Gravitational Wave Observations: from Quantum Optics to Quantum Gravity”, a concerted initiative involving the VUB, KULeuven, UGent and UAntwerpen to boost gravitational wave research in Flanders.

The appointment starts preferably on October 1st, 2021. The duration of the PhD position is 4 years, at the end of which the student is expected to complete his or her PhD.

The application should contain a CV, the transcript of the grades from the bachelor and master program, and a motivation letter including your research interests (max 1 page).

The application documents should be sent by email to Alberto.Mariotti@vub.be and Alexandre.Sevrin@vub.be clearly mentioning in the subject line “GW PhD”. The applicant should also arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent by email to the same addresses.

Letters of reference should be sent to:
